Marvelous Minilessons for Teaching Beginning Writing, K-3
Rog, Lori Jamison
International Reading Association (NJ3)
This practical resource provides 40 research-based, classroom tested, and developmentally appropriate minilessons for kindergarten through grade 3--presented in the context of authentic writing experiences. Teachers can use these lessons to teach students how to: (1) Generate and organize ideas before writing, and then turn their prewriting ideas into connected text; (2) Develop writing style by focusing on word choice, voice, and fluency; (3) Increasingly use conventional spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and grammar to produce more readable work; and (4) Revise their writing for clarity, style, and effectiveness. Also included are charts to help teachers decide which lessons suit students' needs; language that might be used when presenting the lessons to students; notes sections, where teachers can record and reflect on what works and what does not; and reproducibles. The book is divided into the following five chapters: (1) Writing Instruction in K-3 Classrooms; (2) Topics and Details: Getting Started with Writing; (3) Substance and Style: The Writer's Craft; (4) Conventions: The Nuts and Bolts of Writing; and (5) Revision: Making Good Writing Even Better. A list of references; and an index are also included.
