Motivational Strategies that Work! Fall 2006
Educators' Spotlight Digest, v1 n3 Fall 2006
This column is a collaborative effort by library media specialists and K-16 educators who write about the motivational strategies that have worked for them in teaching IL skills. Motivational strategies include ways to gain and sustain attention, increase relevance for learning information literacy skills, build confidence in students' developing research abilities, promote a continuing motivation to engage in research on a topic, or provide satisfaction with research accomplishments. The first group of strategies for K-8 library media specialists and educators focus on ideas for helping high needs students. This article presents the following vignettes written by K-8 library media specialists and educators: (1) "Exploring and Learning in the Library," by Rasheedah Najieb; (2) "Making Learning Challenging," by Carmen del Valle; (3) "Providing a Risk-Free Learning Environment," by Minerva Aponte; (4) "Tapping Into Topic of Interest Raises HS Students' Interest in 'Planning Phase' of Research," by Donna Boyce-Martollo; and (5) "A Memorable Strategy for Library Orientation," by Jennifer McKinnell.
