Inter-American Education: A Curriculum Guide. Bulletin, 1943, No. 2
Bathurst, Effie G.; Mackintosh, Helen K.
US Office of Education, Federal Security Agency
With distance bridged by speedy planes, the Americas of tomorrow will accept as natural and reasonable the exchange of visits between countries separated by several thousand miles. Geography will be learned first hand not confined to books and maps. In the schools of the United States there has long been some inclusion of content on the other American republics but emphasis has been placed on a factual rather than a personal understanding. Over a period of a year and a half there has been a concerted effort on the part of the U.S. Office of Education in cooperation with the Office of the Coordinator of Inter-American Affairs to establish through demonstration centers in elementary and secondary schools, and in teachers colleges in various parts of the United States, a plan for making the study of the other American republics an integral part of the curriculum. Not only to the centers, but to all schools, the study of other American republics is challenging in its possibilities for the instructional program. Regardless of its size or location, a large city school system, a one-room rural school, a laboratory school, a private school, a village school, a parochial school, an independent high-school district, a teachers college anywhere in the United States, can have an equal stake in making an inter-American program become a reality. The suggestions in this bulletin are based on reports from the demonstration centers. A list of bibliographical sources is included. (Contains 8 footnotes.) [Best copy available has been provided.]
