It's Hard Saying Goodbye to an Old Flame
Roy, Ken
Science Scope, v28 n1 p10-12 Sep 2004
As heat sources go, the old standby for elementary and middle school science laboratories has been the centuries old alcohol lamp. Unfortunately, this inexpensive heat producer has been a continuous source of accidents--many of which are relatively serious. Hot plates are emerging as the most popular source of heat for science experiments. The temperature can be controlled within limits. There is no direct flame or threat of explosion. However, certain procedures are in order for safe operation. These procedures are discussed in this article.
