Journal of Children's Literature, v50 n2 p9-24 2024
This article highlights the State-Wide Read Aloud Days of the picturebook "My Shadow is Purple" (Stuart, 2022) held across and beyond the state of Georgia in response to the firing of elementary school teacher Katie Rinderle under Georgia's trio of censorship laws. The goals for this article are to: (1) document and analyze the emergence of Georgia's censorship laws and policies intended to intimidate and silence educators around issues of race and gender; (2) document the termination of Katie Rinderle for using inclusive and affirming literature for LGBTQIA+ and racially marginalized communities, specifically children and youth who identify as nonbinary and transgender; (3) share some intentions and experiences organizing and participating in community read-alouds; and (4) introduce some key concepts from feminist, posthumanist theories that are helpful to think with in terms of organizing justice-oriented work.
