Norwood Elementary, a Title I science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) school in Baltimore County, MD, recently realized that traditional behavior management programs and processes were not working with their students. Over time, school administrators discovered more successful approaches, and restorative practices became the way to transform the culture and climate to one of enduring peacefulness, persistence, grit, and compassion. This article explores the following questions: (1) Do restorative practices change behavior? (2) Do restorative practices foster a peaceful culture in a school? (3) Cam there be improvement in the area of behavior management using restorative practices? The challenge for this school community was the switch to restorative practices in place of a rewards and punishment system. This article describes this process and provides data these administrators believe prove that this school is on the right track.
