This document presents an executive summary of the 96-page "Leading Learning Communities: Standards for What Principals Should Know and Be Able To Do," a guidebook for those who care about creating and supporting quality in schools. It is an operating manual for school leaders that features new strategies to help principals structure and support learning communities that develop the whole child, prepare students for a changing global economy and society, rethink the learning day by bridging school and community and make decisions based on data. Six standards for principal leadership are presented: (1) Balance Management and Leadership Roles placing learning at the center; (2) Set High Expectations and Standards for the academic and social development of all students; (3) Demand Content and Instruction that Ensure Student Achievement of agreed-upon academic standards; (4) Create a Culture of Adult Learning tied to student learning and other school goals; (5) Use Multiple Sources of Data as Diagnostic Tools to assess, identify and apply instructional improvement; and (6) Actively engage the community to create shared responsibility for student and school success.
