Facilitating Young Children's Thinking about Shapes
Lim, Cynthia
Childhood Education, v98 n3 p74-79 2022
In the area of early literacy, the children learned new vocabulary to describe the attributes of triangles and shapes. Through math talk and class discussions, the children also learned about listening to others, turn taking, and voicing their ideas. Although the children described in this article were generally competent in the English language for nursery standards in Singapore, they previously had not had opportunities to engage in class discussions and math talk. Kamii and Lewis explain that children do not learn mathematical concepts by rote; they have to construct the concepts on their own through active learning and explorations.
