There is no doubt that in order to address the serious challenges arising from anthropogenic--or human-produced--climate change, Britain, along with the rest of the world, needs to adopt policies and develop skills that will create a low-carbon economy with a highly effective use of renewable and natural resources. People need to create the knowledge and skills that will enable the kind of sustainable economic development necessary to provide a decent standard of living and quality of life for everybody. The enormity of the task is magnified by the current financial crisis, which has led many policymakers and business leaders to take ideological refuge in their faith in the free market and all too conventional business-as-usual practices. Education, at all levels, whenever and however it is accessed over a person's life-course, should provide a basis for understanding that human beings are part of nature and not separate from it. This is a basic sustainability literacy that should be woven into the fabric of the educational culture. People cannot be citizens of a learning society without such literacy. Furthermore, when it comes to sustainability education, there is little point in concentrating attention predominantly on schools. The majority of people in work now will be in work in 10 years time, when the environment will most likely be in worse shape than it is now--unless, that is, the ways and perceptions of adults are changed now. It is, after all, adults who are making the important decisions affecting the future prospects of today's children. The creation of sustainability-informed professional and personal development opportunities for adults in and out of work, for community groups and third-sector organisations, for trade-union bodies and small- and medium-sized businesses, are of paramount importance because it is changing the here and now that will change the future.
