From Free to Fee: Twenty Years of "Science on the Go!"
Rosa, Rafael; Elbert, Josie
Journal of Museum Education, v36 n1 p9-18 Spr 2011
Many new teacher professional development programs in museums are begun with external funding from government or private foundations. At some point the museum must develop a plan for sustainability when the original grant support is no longer available. Some programs are able to find long term support but many end due to lack of funding, regardless of successful educational outcomes. The authors discuss a program that has successfully transitioned from a model that was grant supported to one that is primarily based on fee for services. Key to the discussion is how the transition was managed, how the program's perceived values have changed, and the challenges that have occurred to maintain the program's integrity and relevance as the educational landscape changed.
