Street Life Soccer is a football project which was set up four years ago. It was the result of a workshop at a homeless hostel in Norwich, carried out by Blue Cat, a local company which develops engagement activities for learners traditionally considered "hard to reach". It was obvious that the one thing people desperately wanted was to play football. Funding from the Football Foundation and the East of England Development Agency's Investing in Communities fund enabled Blue Cat co-founders Mike Smith-Clare and Frances Longman to set up the project proper. Street Life Soccer now runs for 30-weeks across the year, with daily two-hour sessions, comprising an hour of "team talk"--during which learners cover such areas as problem-solving, communication and working as a team in a relaxed environment more akin to a boot room than a conventional classroom--followed by an hour of football at Norwich City facilities, with the club's coaches, all in the shadow of City's famous Carrow Road stadium. In addition to the training, players take part in a tournament, in which teams drawn from the programme compete against each other. In this article, the author describes how the programme works and how football is kicking open the door to work, education and self-fulfilment.
