Fighting through Whatever Blocks You
Chudnov, Daniel
Computers in Libraries, v30 n2 p32-34 Mar 2010
An experienced developer might have a bagful of techniques to reach for when his/her code is not working. For both new and experienced coders, if they have stared at broken code for hours without any idea what's wrong, it can be easy to reach for emotional responses first. The code might be messed up, but one's constructive options for dealing with it are always straightforward. For those who are taking on a technical task and find themselves stuck, the author offers some positive approaches they can take to get themselves unblocked. These include: (1) Get something working; (2) Narrow it down; (3) Is it plugged in?; (4) Take a break; (5) Revert to a working version; (6) Explain it to somebody; and (7) Ask for help. The author suggests that when one gets stuck, one has to reach for this list instead of letting one's emotions get in the way of a solution.
