The term "community cohesion" has become an all-important buzzword for policymakers, thinkers and commentators in Britain. Sadly, the term is associated with the phenomenon of terrorism and inquiries into the place of Muslims in Britain. "Our Shared Future," the report of the Commission on Integration and Community Cohesion, defines "community cohesion" principally as the process that must happen to ensure different groups of people get on well together. It is a social process that needs emotional attachment and ownership from all communities. Tolerance, respect and an ethos of partnership are the ingredients for any meaningful community cohesion. A summer conference considered the implications for further education of current policy interest in community cohesion. In this article, the authors share their perspectives on the difference colleges can make.
