TechTrends: Linking Research and Practice to Improve Learning, v51 n5 p62-65 Oct 2007
Delivery and formatting techniques for technical materials have traditionally been determined by common sense, not cognitive theory. In fact, for hundreds of years, verbal messages in the form of lecture and print have been the primary method of disseminating information to the learner. To move beyond verbal messages and toward the assimilation of cognitive theory, the literature proposes that the implementation of specific instructional strategies designed to facilitate selecting, organizing, and integrating by learners within a multimedia program can positively affect learning (Lever-Duffy, McDonald & Mizell, 2005). This article introduces the Poultry Disease Risk Management CD-ROM which was developed and designed to incorporate these strategies in an effort to increase understanding of poultry disease. The Biosecurity CD is organized into four main divisions with hyperlinks to explore each section in detail. The divisions are: (1) concepts and programs; (2) understanding infectious diseases; (3) interactivity and video; and (4) additional resources available via the CD. (Contains 4 figures.)
