S.E.E. Program Parents' Manual: How to Raise a Child with Epilepsy. Part One: Coping with Fear
Mittan, Robert J.
Exceptional Parent, v35 n10 p60-69 Oct 2005
Epilepsy has one of the worst social outcomes for child development of the common disabilities. For most children, epilepsy is not nearly the physical challenge that many other chronic health disorders are. The problem in raising a child with epilepsy is much more emotional and social. In this first part of a three-part article series, the author shares the information and skills that parents need in order to raise happy and competent children with epilepsy. The author aims to give back more peace of mind to the parents in explaining that getting informed about epilepsy helps parents overcome their fear of death associated with epilepsy; and that contrary to most parents' beliefs, there is no substantial evidence that epilepsy causes brain damage in individuals.
