Adherence to Standards in the Development of E-Learning Programs
Novacek, Paul F.
Adult Learning, v27 n1 p38-40 Feb 2016
Consistent user interface standards are necessary with the development of e-learning courseware, as they are the glue that binds the users' experience with their expectations. For example, the user controls for video playback were standardized many years ago, and we all benefit knowing a right-facing triangle signifies a play function, while dual vertical lines indicate a pause function. Without consensual standards established when the digital video industry was in its infancy, our functional expectations would run astray. Even though there is progress, the reluctance to implement e-learning standards is still a problem, as this researcher continues to see frustration in the eyes of learners when trying to navigate a poorly designed CBT user interface. The resultant interruption in the learning process severely reduces the efficiency of training programs. In the eyes of this researcher, further promotion and support for standards adherence is necessary to ease the burden on the learner and expand the e-learning industry.
