The notion that everyone who is impacted by a crime has an investment in the process of how the offender is dealt with is gaining acceptance in diverse contexts around the world. This notion, called restorative justice, is an approach that brings together the offender and individuals impacted by the offender's behavior in a problem-solving process designed to repair the harm caused by the offending behavior. The purpose of this article is to describe a Family Group Conferencing case study within the juvenile court system in Louisville, Kentucky. It will define family group conferencing; discuss the step-by-step process of implementing and sustaining the family group conferencing pilot project; and discuss lessons learned. This in-depth review seeks to assist lawyers, judges, and community stakeholders in other jurisdictions who are attempting to implement restorative justice practices with young offenders.
