Parent University: Enhancing Family Engagement by Empowering Families
Andrea M. James
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Wilmington University (Delaware)
Family engagement is a major component in assisting student success and academic growth; however, within the inner city, it can be difficult to get families engaged due to many different factors. Schools can increase family engagement by giving families the knowledge to be successful. The purpose of this dissertation is to present how effective it is to implement a parent education program within an inner-city school setting where family engagement is extremely low. In this study, the parent education program was called Parent University. The study was conducted in an inner-city elementary school setting, and this study includes qualitative and quantitative data collection methods. The study results show that implementing a parent education program such as Parent University positively affected connections and communication among families, schools, and community partners. Furthermore, the findings illustrate that Parent University not only created and fostered relationships, but it started to shift the mindset and perspectives of our families as well as teachers, staff, and community partners. The results of the implementation of the Parent University will be shared with other schools across the district as a strategy to enhance family engagement as well as a tool to give families the knowledge to assist their children at home. The use of Parent University is an innovation designed to help create positive connections and relationships among home, school, and community, increase academic growth, assist with behaviors, and, most of all, empower families with the knowledge, access, and opportunity to be successful.
