Tiffany Pryor
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, The Florida State University
Training and development are used extensively in the United States to impact employee learning and performance. The considerable investment and expenditures across public and private sectors and the vast number of employees who receive support from training and development professionals warrants exploration into how instructional designers are supporting a culturally diverse labor force. This qualitative research study explores how and why instructional designers developing training in a non-academic, adult learning settings incorporate cultural responsiveness in their instructional design (ID) practices. Incorporating evidence from semi-structured interviews with thirteen instructional designers across various levels of experience and organizational types, findings demonstrate that instructional designers are incorporating culturally responsive strategies in support of diverse learner populations. Results suggest that focus can be placed on cultural responsiveness during all phases of the systematic ID process and that there are considerable instructional, institutional, and personal dimensions working together at various degrees. Designers rely on their existing ID knowledge and institutional supports to execute their strategies and are driven by personal experiences and an organizational culture that respects diversity, equity, and inclusion.
