The Student-Parent Experience at an Urban Northeastern Community College: Examining Current Experiences and Improving Communication
Beth A. Monchun
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Bay Path University
The landscape of higher education has changed considerably over the past several decades as a more diverse population of students seeks higher education. Nontraditional students--those who are not entering college as first-time, full-time students immediately after college--are increasingly the norm on college campuses. Student-parents are a growing subpopulation of the larger nontraditional population and have needs that are quite different from traditional students. These needs are both curricular and extracurricular in nature, and also extend to basic needs support. Institutions of higher education have only recently begun to collect data on student-parents and conduct research on their on-campus experiences to determine what may be done to better support these students on their path to degree completion. This study contributes to the research on the experiences and needs of student-parents enrolled at a community college in the northeastern United States. The "Family Friendly Campus Toolkit" was used to conduct the action research. Data were collected using an inventory of existing resources, a document review, an electronic survey, and interviews. Findings suggest that student-parents feel isolated from their peers, are not aware of existing college and community resources, need additional childcare, and need a centralized location in which they can locate necessary information. The researcher collaborated with student-parents and colleagues to design a virtual student-parent resource center designed to support their educational journey and provide community resources to assist with basic needs.
