Teenagers and Their Babies: A Perinatal Home Visitor's Guide
Cardone, Ida; Gilkerson, Linda; Wechsler, Nick
ZERO TO THREE
"Teenagers and Their Babies" is a self-study and preparation guide for paraprofessional home-based visitors to engage expectant and new parents in an exploration of their baby's development and their expectations for parenthood. The guide includes service interventions--strategies, techniques, and activities--for home visitors and doulas to use in their work and provides users with ideas culled from theory, research, and practice. "Teenagers and Their Babies" is based on the Community-Based FANA, a set of principles, methods, and activities that home visitors can use to promote emotional availability and engagement between parents and their unborn infant and, later, their newborn. It is designed as a structured intervention that home visitors facilitate with pregnant teenagers and their partners. The Community-Based FANA offers detailed information and instructions for activities for prenatal and postnatal home visits covering the period from 26 weeks gestation to 4 weeks after birth. "Teenagers and Their Babies" provides all the information home visitors need to begin using the Community-Based FANA as part of their work with young families. The prenatal activities begin in the last trimester of pregnancy. Each of the prenatal visits focuses on a different aspect of development, guiding the reader as staff help parents explore their unborn baby's development in utero and preview their newborn's development. The postnatal Community-Based FANA activities are designed for home or hospital visits. These activities can be facilitated with parents in the days after the baby is born, or even as soon as hours after delivery.
