Cristobal Salinas Jr.; Diana Cervantes – Journal of Cases in Educational Leadership, 2024
The term Latinx has received increasing levels of pushback from different entities outside and within higher education. Despite the term's wide popularity in academic spaces, higher education practitioners often utilize it without understanding whom it simultaneously includes and excludes, and whom the term refers to. Such practice perpetuates the…

Naturalistic, Developmental, and Behavioral Interventions (NDBIs) are an empirically supported intervention approach for young autistic children and their families. Spanish-speaking (SS) Latinx families have been underrepresented in autism intervention research, limiting our understanding of whether NDBIs are aligned with Latinx family values and…

Borja Blanco; Monika Molnar; Irene Arrieta; César Caballero-Gaudes; Manuel Carreiras – Developmental Science, 2025
Language learning is influenced by both neural development and environmental experiences. Based on our impression of a tremendous increase in research in L1-based multilingual education (MLE) worldwide in recent years, our small team of multilingual, multicultural researchers began a stocktaking project in 2017. Gloria Soto; Kerstin Tönsing – Augmentative and Alternative Communication, 2024
Core vocabulary lists and vocabulary inventories vary according to language. Lists from one language cannot and should not be assumed to be translatable, as words represent language-specific concepts and grammar. In this manuscript, we (a) present the results of a vocabulary overlap analysis between different published core vocabulary lists in…

Erika Lynn Exton – ProQuest LLC, 2024
Code-switching (switching between languages) is a common linguistic behavior in bilingual speech directed to infants and children. In adult-directed speech (ADS), acoustic-phonetic properties of one language may transfer to the other language close to a code-switch point; for example, English stop consonants may be more Spanish-like near a switch.…

Evidence from Canada suggests that accent bias can be moderated by speakers' demonstrated job-relevant performance and the prestige level of their occupation (Teló et al. 2022). In this study, we replicated Teló et al.'s (2022) work in Brazil. First language (L1) Brazilian Portuguese-speaking listeners rated audio recordings of L1 Brazilian…

Emergent bi/multilingual children have historically been afforded few opportunities to engage dialogically with peers and teachers in posing authentic questions and co-constructing interpretations of texts as their reading instruction has traditionally been skills driven.
