Medical Emergencies Occurring in School: A Scenario-Based Training Program for School Staff

Background: Families entrust their children to school staff with the expectation that they will keep their children healthy and safe for an average of seven hours a day. The reality is, medical emergencies due to trauma or illness, can occur at any time, whether it involves an adult or a student. From individual medical events to mass illness or injury events, school nurses are expected to be prepared to respond, while often being the only healthcare provider in the building. However, many school settings have no school nurse available to them, or the nurse is not employed full-time. Literature shows that school faculty and staff are often not trained to respond to medical events or have knowledge of student healthcare needs. Purpose: The purpose of this scholarly project was to determine if a scenario-based training program of acute medical problems for school staff improves their knowledge and ability to identify emergencies in schools. Methods: A convenience sample of 47 school staff were recruited to participate in the scenario-based training program. The program entailed a two-hour presentation of a combination of lecture, discussion, and simulation of various acute medical problems. A pre-test and post-test were administered to obtain measures of staff knowledge gain. Data was analyzed using a paired t-test to determine statistical significance. Results: 91.4% of participants showed an improvement in score from pre-test to post-test, with a mean difference of +4.04. A paired t-test demonstrated a significant large difference t (46)= 8.98 , p < 0.001. Conclusions: Findings revealed that the scenario-based training program increased the knowledge of school faculty and staff in identifying a medical emergency at school.
