Building a Safe Organizational Space and Culture to Support Local Head Start Members
Stephanie D. Piecuch
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, University of Dayton
This study identifies how to implement a cultural competency training program within a local Head Start program. Head Start is a federally funded program. It provides comprehensive services to children and families identified as low-income and culturally minoritized. The diversely populated Head Start program at the center of this study strives to promote positive school and family participation. Social service providers should be attuned to the community where they live and work to embrace diversity and ensure inclusion to strengthen and enrich the serviced community's needs. The ability to increase cultural awareness and perspective while gaining the knowledge and ability to discuss diversity, equity, and inclusion to inform the design and implementation of related professional development efforts has been examined while maximizing the safety of the learning environment. Providing opportunities while keeping an open mind and educating oneself to increase awareness and comfortability have been identified as variables necessary to navigate the organization's culture. This can be met with resistance and other known barriers. Acknowledging the obstacles, beliefs, and culture within the community service work will initiate the process of embedding DEI into professional development agency training. Taking a proactive approach and anticipating potential challenges can positively impact change. The Individualized Cultural Conceptual Framework seeks to guide the learning and understanding of this study.
