A Correlation Study of Philanthropic Revenue to Employment and Philanthropic Research
Carla Wright Gentles
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Grand Canyon University
This quantitative correlational research included examination of whether relationships exist between philanthropic revenue, employment, and philanthropic research in the year 2019 for US philanthropic organizations. As US government resources decrease and societal needs increase, the reliance on philanthropic support to bridge unmet societal needs continues to grow (Cheng, 2019), spurring growing discussions in the professionalization of philanthropy through academic programing (Brunt, 2020). Philanthropy addresses complex societal needs which spurred requirements for structural connectors to address philanthropic research by the synthetization of employment application, and academic research for effective solutions to this problem space through philanthropic research, and associated performance outcomes. Science mapping (Small, 1999) and theory of change (Weiss, 1995) were foundational theories used to examine if relationship exists between annual philanthropic revenue and philanthropic employment and relationships between employment and research for US philanthropic organizations in 2019. By examining n = 90 US philanthropic organizations reported to the IRS gathered by Cause IQ. The results confirmed a statistically significant correlation of annual total revenue and employees (r (90) = 0.59; p = 0.001); and a statistically insignificant effect on 2019 total annual employees and grants awarded for research (r (90) =0.13; p = 0.24). Results prompt recommendations to examine possible drivers of philanthropic research grants awarded, including (a) environmental, policy, (b) funding shifts, and (c) episodic disruptive implications to philanthropic research.
