Comparing Gifted Learner Friendship Numbers to a U.S. Adult Sample
Bruce M. Shore
Roeper Review, v47 n1 p60-62 2025
In a national survey of U.S. adults, the number of close friends increased with age and 76% reported having three or more. However, 8% reported having none. There are limited parallel data for gifted learners but the survey provided an opportunity to compare the two groups. The numbers of close friends for gifted learners appears to increase from high school to university, from about 4 to between 5 and 6. The numbers of close friends reported by gifted learners roughly parallels wider adult experience. Attention to those experiencing challenges forming or maintaining friendships is not mitigated by these observations, but the unique nature of gifted friendships perhaps lies in the nature and role of the friendships rather than their numbers.
