Nadia N. Butt
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, The George Washington University
The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore the lived experiences of Muslim professionals in U.S. workplaces with varying levels of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts. The research, conducted through a basic qualitative approach with twenty participants, delved into the personal and professional narratives of these individuals across multiple industries and sectors. The study was guided by the central question: "How do Muslim professionals experience workplaces with differing levels of DEI initiatives?" The participants shared their unique stories, highlighting the intersection of their multiple identities and the challenges that arise in diverse workplace environments. From the data, three key themes emerged: Intersectional & Pluralistic Experiences, Identity-based Discrimination, and Workplace Dynamics. These themes provided a deeper understanding of how Muslim professionals navigate identity complexities, including social identity, personal identity, and identity threats in relation to their work experiences. The findings contributed to broader interpretations of social identity theory, diversity management, and the role of intersectional identities in shaping workplace experiences. Based on these insights, recommendations for both future research and practical applications in DEI efforts were offered. This study emphasizes the need for organizations to recognize and address the nuanced experiences of Muslim employees to foster truly inclusive workplaces.
