East Meets West: Rome. Grade 6 Model Lesson for Unit V. California History-Social Science Course Models.
Zachlod, Michelle, Ed.
This unit for sixth-grade students provides a fuller understanding of Julius Caesar's significance. Before students delve into the sample topic, they need an understanding of Roman values, lore, republican ideals, and structure of early Roman history. The first few activities in this lesson are to be taught prior to beginning the actual study of Caesar. The course model demonstrates how learning can be cumulative, leading toward a clearer understanding of later historical and cultural events. Topics are: history and geography of the Roman republic and Roman Empire, including Julius Caesar and the Pax Romana; rise, spread, and basic tenets of Christianity, selections from the Christian Bible; legacy of Rome such as the arts and philosophy; selective review of civilizations studied; and inheritance from Rome and Christianity. This lesson discusses the uses and significance of the topic; presentation and activities ("Beginning the Topic"; "Developing the Topic"; "Culminating the Topic"); provides activities for other topics; provides extended and correlated activities, contains a 35-item list of resources for the sample topic; a list of general resources for student and teacher use; and visual and performing arts resources. Appended are "The Story of Firmus" and "Julius Caesar, the First Emperor of Rome." Suggested time for lesson implementation is eight weeks. (BT)
