Shymansky, James A.; Yore, Larry D. – School Science and Mathematics, 1979
Using the Fry Readability approach and a ten percent random sample of all reading materials from each grade level within a program, readability data were collected on six popular elementary science textbook series. Fry readability averages and ranges for the six programs surveyed are reported by grade level. (Author/MK)

Craig, Madge T.; Yore, Larry D. – Journal of Research and Development in Education, 1996
This study examined middle school students' reported awareness of strategic approaches they used when they had difficulty reading science text. Student responses indicated that they used text and social context to resolve comprehension difficulties but that they were largely unaware of the use of prior knowledge for the same purpose. (SM)

Yore, Larry D. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1991
Reports a naturalistic study to develop and validate a "Science and Reading Questionnaire" to assess secondary science teachers' attitudes toward science reading and their belief or informed opinions about science reading. The items for this instrument are presented. (PR)

Craig, Madge T.; Yore, Larry D. – Reading Psychology, 1995
Finds surface-level metacognitive knowledge across three metacognitive domains--declarative, procedural, and conditional. Finds that average middle school students' (grades four through eight) metacognitive knowledge of science reading, science text, and science reading strategies is similar to that of younger and poorer readers of narrative text.…

Yore, Larry D.; Denning, David – 1989
Most secondary science courses in North America are designed to use textbooks as the primary or exclusive source of information about the content or processes of science, and most science teachers focus their instruction on a single text. Although there are many serious issues raised by the overwhelming reliance on text-based teaching/learning in…

Yore, Larry D.; And Others – 1990
This study was designed to develop effective and time efficient assessment techniques for self-appraisal of science text and science reading and to assess middle grade students' metacognitive knowledge about science text and science reading. Standardized interviews, word associations, concept maps, and objective examinations were administered to…

Yore, Larry D.; And Others – 1993
This study attempted to verify a strategic metacognition model of an efficient, successful science reader based on an analytical induction of reading research results; develop a valid objective assessment instrument; and provide a profile of middle school students' metacognitive knowledge about science reading, science test, and text reading…

Yore, Larry D.; Craig, Madge T.; Maguire, Tom O. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1998
This study sought to develop and verify the Index of Science Reading Awareness (ISRA) based on a model of an efficient, successful interactive-constructive science reader and three independent metacognitive awareness domains. Results did not support the assumption about the three independent metacognitive awareness domains and also indicated that…

Rivard, Leonard; Yore, Larry D. – 1992
The purpose of this paper is to update the review of science-related reading research conducted by Yore and Shymansky (1985) and to provide a current research foundation for a science reading research agenda. This review emphasizes the post-1985 literature and selected pre-1985 literature not included in the earlier summary. This summary addresses…

Yore, Larry D.; Shymansky, James A. – 1985
With traditional science textbooks still dominating the market, it is projected that the use of print material and related reading skills will persist as the prime method of science instruction. The need to research reading-science issues exists. This paper attempts to define the task or desired outcomes of research in reading-science dimensions.…
