This paper reviews the research in economics education at the postsecondary level, discussing the kinds of research, summarizing the conclusions, and suggesting areas for further research. Economics education developed in three phases. From 1865-1900 political economy was incorporated into the curriculum. In 1900-1930 the emphasis was on commercial education and the goal shifted to understanding the world. The 1930s saw a debate between advocates of classical principles and government intervention, but from 1940-1960 employment theory or social accounting became popular. Since the 1960s the systematic investigation of economics education has emerged due to many factors including new testing devices, research workshops, and educational innovations. The majority of the research has been done on the postsecondary Principles of Economics course ascertaining the effects of different teaching methods. During the last few years, there have been some studies using new perspectives and analytical techniques seldom used before. This should continue, with a broadening of scope to include other economics courses and non-formal postsecondary economics education activities, including the impact of primary sources. (CK)
