Economic Education in an International Context
Watts, Michael; Walstad, William B.
Journal of Economic Education, v41 n4 p410-412 2010
In this article, the authors explain the purpose and context for the 2009 International Symposium on Economic Education that was the source for articles on four nations with relatively developed systems for economic education: Australia, England, Japan, and Korea. The authors highlight several key comparisons from the four articles that appear in this "Journal of Economic Education" issue. The main purpose of the symposium was to present information on key trends and programs in nations with high incomes, market-based economies, and extensive and well-funded educational systems for precollege and university students. The focus was on how similar or different the trends and programs in economic education are in these nations that are alike in many fundamental ways but still different in institutional and cultural respects. Four of the many interesting comparisons and contrasts among the papers are these: (1) Economic majors; (2) Economic curriculum; (3) Secondary schools; and (4) Research in economic education.
