The three papers included in this report address typography for graphic communication, typographic access structures for educational texts, and typography as macropunctuation. The first paper considers the consequences of an aesthetic bias in the literature of typography, and identifies two misleading assumptions about textbooks; i.e., that print processes are inflexible and finite and that textbooks are continuous prose. The need to de-mystify the printing process is discussed and evidence for selectivity as a strategy of efficient readers is reviewed. The second paper suggests some reasons why the research literature contains very few references to typographic access devices such as contents lists, headings, and glossaries; and suggests that research needs to be more firmly rooted in real-world problems to be truly actionable. The last paper makes a case for the inclusion of graphic and spatial factors in the linguistic analysis of text and in common rules and guidelines for clear writing. Conceptual problems are considered, and a parallel is drawn between the roles of punctuation and typography at the micro- and macro-levels of texts. A 13-item bibliography is included. (CHC)
