Waits, Bert K.; Silver, Jerry L. – Two-Year College Mathematics Journal, 1973
Two approaches are discussed for calculating the work necessary to pump water from a conical or parabolic container. The direct method derived from the definition of work is easy to misuse, as illustrated by a student's incorrect solution. (JP)

Waits, Bert K.; Elbrink, Larry C. – 1969
The purpose of this study was to determine whether students' responses to the Ullman student evaluation of teaching, the Student Evaluation of Teaching (SET) instrument, were biased by their achievement. The instrument was administered to all 325 students taking a second course in calculus with economic applications, near the end of the course;…

Demana, Franklin; Waits, Bert K. – Mathematics Teacher, 1989
Discusses the use of graphing calculators for polar and parametric equations. Presents eight lines of the program for the graph of a parametric equation and 11 lines of the program for a graph of a polar equation. Illustrates the application of the programs for planetary motion and free-fall motion. (YP)

Waits, Bert K.; Demana, Franklin – Mathematics Teacher, 1988
Argues that the college preparatory curriculum should include more than three years of mathematics. Presents data indicating that 86 percent of students with less than three years of college preparatory mathematics take remedial mathematics and relatively few students are ready to take calculus when they enter the university.
