This guide for aviation technician training begins with a course description, resource information, and a course outline. Tasks/competencies are categorized into 16 concept/duty areas: understanding technical symbols and abbreviations; understanding mathematical terms, symbols, and formulas; computing decimals; computing fractions; computing ratio and proportions; understanding how to extract square root; understanding how to compute powers of 10; using conversion tables; understanding physics terms, symbols, and formulas; understanding the densities of various solids, liquids, and gases; understanding the aircraft weighting procedure and computation of aircraft weight and balance; understanding the application of Newton's laws of motion; understanding the relationship between heat and energy, the concept of heat transference, and the four common temperature scales; understanding how Pascal's laws, Bernoulli's principle, and Boyle's law apply to aviation mechanics; understanding the fundamentals of reading and preparing technical publications and drawings; and understanding the causes and effects of corrosion. Three to 10 tasks are listed for each concept/duty. A performance objective, criterion-referenced measure, and enabling objective are provided for each task/competency.
