Tamir, Pinchas; Gardner, Paul – Research in Science and Technological Education, 1989
The purpose of this study was to identify interest patterns related to high school biology. Eight task dimensions were established before testing. Findings include: the highest interest was in human biology topics and students whose parents' employment was science related showed higher interest in biology. (CW)

Tamir, Pinchas – Research in Science and Technological Education, 1985
Ability to distinguish between causal (cause-effect) and teleological (means-ends) explanations was measured in 1905 twelfth-grade biology students and found to be dependent on student knowledge. Although the inability to make these distinctions contributes to misconceptions in biology, appropriate instruction can easily remedy the problem. Sample…

Tamir, Pinchas – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1985
Describes changes and effects of the Israeli paper-and-pencil matriculation examination in biology since first analysis in 1972. The examination has been significant for implementing an inquiry-oriented high school biology program based on the Biological Sciences Curriculum Study. Implications for upgrading science education are discussed.…

Zohar, Anat; Tamir, Pinchas – School Science and Mathematics, 1993
Describes the rationale and activities developed and tested by the Biology Critical Thinking project (BCT). Presents the project guidelines for developing activities, a list of skills selected as goals of BCT, instruments used in determining effectiveness of the activities, results of the pilot study, and a sample activity involving vitamins. (MDH)

Amir, Ruth; Tamir, Pinchas – American Biology Teacher, 1994
Describes remedial instruction activities as well as activity developmental strategies that utilize the results obtained from previous research on students' misconceptions related to photosynthesis to enhance 11th- and 12th-grade biology students' understanding of photosynthesis. (ZWH)

Friedler, Yael; Tamir, Pinchas – 1984
The intended, perceived, implemented, and achieved curriculum of high school biology classes in Israel was studied using a variety of data sources and research methodologies. The intended curriculum was identified by analysis of commonly used laboratory manuals. The perceived curriculum was captured by procuring the views of teachers and students…

Tamir, Pinchas – American Biology Teacher, 1992
A survey examined Israeli biology teachers' (n=95 student teachers and 118 practicing teachers) understanding of biology. Discusses teachers' knowledge, pedagogical content knowledge, interest, and attitudes on characteristics including levels of biological organization; self-reported profiles; background variables; and differences between…

Tamir, Pinchas – Research in Science and Technological Education, 1983
Results from Biology Cognitive Preference Inventory taken by grade 12 Jewish (N=406) and Arab (N=297) biology majors revealed similarities between cognitive preferences, achievement, and background variables. Reports that, in spite of substantial cultural and home differences, both groups became oriented toward principles/questioning rather than…

Tamir, Pinchas – Research in Science and Technological Education, 1995
Identified strategies high school students (n=174) use in studying from textbooks and their relationships to selected environmental and personal variables. Found some students always use the same strategies whereas others study differently for different purposes. Most study longer for tests. Outlines were the most widely used study tool. (15…

Zohar, Anat; Tamir, Pinchas – 1991
This study describes the rationale and activities developed and tested by a project in Israel entitled Biology Critical Thinking (BCT). The BCT project aims at developing a pool of activities that can be incorporated within the regular course of study without investing too much extra time. The purposes of the study are: (1) to present the…

Tamir, Pinchas – Journal of Biological Education, 1983
Compared transactions in junior/senior high biology classes and indentified relationships between classroom conditions, lesson format, and instructional activities. Found instruction characterized by inquiry-oriented, laboratory-based learning led and guided by the teacher, with only medium dependence on the textbook. Also found the Structured…

Tamir, Pinchas; Caridin, Hani – Research in Science and Technological Education, 1993
Describes a study designed to achieve the following goals: (1) compare the perceptions of learning environment in biology and chemistry classrooms by Jewish and Arab students; (2) identify gender effects in the Arab sample on learning environments; and (3) compare the perceptions of Arab students in rural and city schools. (ZWH)

Tamir, Pinchas – Journal of Educational Research, 1989
The purpose of this study was to examine the home and school effects on science achievement of 12th-grade students (N=2,277) in Israel. Significant correlates of achievement included home environment, quantity of instruction, interest, and motivation. (IAH)

Tamir, Pinchas – Gifted Education International, 1993
Comparison of differences between the top 5% of ninth- (n=1942) and twelfth-grade (n=2277) students in science achievement and remaining students found that far more high achievers were male, typically came from small families, and had parents with more formal education (often in the sciences). High achievers typically preferred questioning over…
