Academic honesty/dishonesty at North Carolina State University was studied through a survey of undergraduate students and teaching faculty at the beginning of the fall 1975 semester. Information is presented on the percentage of students who have cheated, faculty estimation of cheating, estimated percentage of cheating falling into selected categories, major reasons why students cheated, and reaction to cheating by students and faculty. A sample of faculty comments on academic honesty/dishonesty are appended. Major findings include: approximately 8-10 percent of undergraduates cheated during the 1974-75 academic year; students and faculty agree that a majority of all dishonesty involves either cheating during testing or plagiarism; and approximately one-fourth of both students and faculty said that a certain percentage will cheat regardless of classroom or other conditions. Student reaction to observed cheating is largely indifference. Faculty are much more likely to take some action, but this primarily includes handling the case individually without reporting it to the campus judicial system. Survey questions are appended. (SW)
