The arts are important, not only because they provide insights into significant human ideas and values, but also because of their capacity to generate experiences that should be part of a full and rewarding life. This book considers: (1) the ideal of excellence; (2) excellence in art; (3) excellence in art education; (4) elitism; and (5) initiatives toward excellence. Excellence in art is described in terms of worthwhile experiences and quality, and excellence in art education is defined as synonymous with an excellent art curriculum. This book, which focuses on secondary school art education programs, argues that the quest for excellence in art education is not elitist and that commitment to and praise of excellence are traditional democratic values. A historical summary of past efforts to improve art education is provided, along with a discussion of possible future initiatives. The essay urges that, since education is the subject of intense discussion in the United States, art education organizations should anticipate and assert leadership. Concern is expressed that art educators appear to continue to remain a collection of individuals rather than a unified and directed profession. (JHP)
