Crime and Campus Police: A Handbook for Police Officers and Administrators.
Smith, Michael Clay
In today's litigious climate, it is imperative that those with responsibility for safety on college campuses know the basic legal parameters regarding crime on campus and take positive steps to help eliminate the problem. This book examines the legal parameters concerning all aspects of crime on campus and provides a background and framework in which campus police, and those charged with addressing campus crime, can implement measures to deal with it. Specific suggestions and checklists are given that are designed to reduce the magnitude of the problem. Specific chapters address the following topics: (1) paradoxes of crime and violence on campus; (2) the authority and jurisdiction of campus police; (3) campus arrests and criminal court procedures; (4) campus search and seizure; (5) campus judicial proceedings; (6) maintenance of order on campuses; (7) white collar crime; (8) violent offenses; (9) juveniles and the criminal justice system; (10) officers as witnesses; and (11) civil and criminal liability of campus police. (Contains a list of legal cases, a list of resources for legal information in both secondary and higher education, and an index.) (GLR)
