This book provides a practical approach or model for eliminating racism in education. The model has been developed over several years and is based on research and direct experience in various types and levels of educational settings. This model for change is aimed primarily at whites and/or white-oriented institutions. The book deals with the model stage by stage, demonstrating its utility with examples in a number of school, college and university settings. A number of major principles are incorporated in this approach to eliminating racism. First, it is outcome oriented. The emphasis is on the results of actions rather than on the actions themselves. Second, it includes monitoring methods at each stage. Third, the suggested procedures are progressive; that is, one must work through the various stages sequentially, building on each earlier stage. Fourth, the suggestions in the model should be applied so as to provide minimum discomfort to the people or institutions one is attempting to change. Finally, the active involvement of participants is an important strategy for the "change agent" implementing the model. Minority and majority group members must participate as change agents and/ or consultants. (Author)
