From Ancient Rome to the Intifada: Historical Novels for Spanish-Speaking Adolescents
Schon, Isabel
Social Studies, v95 n2 p75 Mar-Apr 2004
To encourage Spanish-speaking adolescents to read about other times, peoples, and places, we must expose them to books that will entertain them, captivate them, or inspire them. To do so, we should offer them a wide selection of historical novels that combine imagination with facts--integrated stories with fictional protagonists and suspenseful plots. Especially engaging for reluctant teens are story lines featuring large doses of adventure, suspense, or mystery. The list of recently published books in this article include special attributes of well-written historical fiction--believable characters with whom young readers can identify and settings that are integral to the story. To assist selectors, the author has organized the book list by historical era, by countries or regions of the world, and by points of view that are underrepresented in books for adolescents. Also, the author provides a tentative grade level for each book discussed. It is important to remember, however, that the individual student's Spanish reading ability, interest, taste, and purpose should be the main criteria for determining the true reading level of each book.
