The 20th of January 2009, will always be known as the date of the inauguration of the first African-American President of the United States. The journey--historically, socially and emotionally--has been a long one. The story of race relations in America, from exploitation to excellence, has been told by many in various forms, from song and dance to narrative fiction and expository history. The style of storytelling of the artist who made the quilt presented in this article is one approach that deserves closer consideration. This article features the artist, Yvonne Wells, who used appliqued and quilted fabric to create a portrait of an era and an acknowledgment of individuals who contributed, either through their negative or positive deeds, to important social change in the United States. The quilt is full-sized, and could be placed on a bed to keep someone warm on a cool winter night, yet it is hardly intended for such use. The quilts that she makes and creates are considered wall hangings. They represent pictures, as a painter puts his pictures on the wall. Soulful storytellers such as Wells keep the narrative alive, and all the while, the good or not-so-good that comes from people's deeds is sewn into the textured fabric of history.
