Citizenship Education: "The" Goal of Education
Risinger, C. Frederick
Social Education, v73 n7 p330-331 Nov-Dec 2009
In this article, the author addresses classroom teachers, department heads, and supervisors who have direct contact with students and what they learn. They need to tell students, parents, policymakers, and everyone else that social studies is critical and that the NCSS mission statement is not just a nice set of words, but absolutely crucial to America's future. They need to advocate for the field of civic/citizenship education--to take the message that citizenship is not "a" goal of education, it's "the" goal of education. The websites recommended in this article include information about this dilemma that the author hopes will give one some knowledge to become an advocate for the field. Some will be familiar, because the field of civic/citizenship education includes groups that have been around for a long time, and the author has frequently recommended them. There will be some lesson plans and classroom activities that will help one deliver this message to students and parent groups. (Contains 1 note.)
