Investigated titles of chief student affairs officers (CSAOs) in 1,451 four-year public and private institutions listed in the 1984 Higher Education Directory. Results indicate the majority of CSAOs hold the dean of students title and that titles differ significantly by gender and size of institution. (Author)

Examined employment patterns of chief student affairs officers in a national sample varied by sex, race, and institutional type. Responding institutions (N=1,391) had the following representation: White men, 833 (75 percent); white women, 156 (14 percent); male minorities, 100 (9 percent); female minorities, 22 (2 percent). Compares career characteristics of male and female, and minority and non-minority chief student affairs officers. Females differed from males on seven variables, including appointment at a younger age, less education, and different titles. Proposes a self-auditing 20-item checklist to assist chief student affairs officers (CSAOs) in developing greater knowledge of student health services options. The audit checklist, based on consultations with 103 institutions, was used in a survey of 166 randomly selected CSAOs. Results of the survey are discussed. (TE)

Examined turnover among chief student affairs officers (CSAO) from 1974-1981. Analyzed annual and aggregate turnover data of higher education institutions. A comparison with three other administrative positions, chief executive officer, chief academic officer, and chief business officer, indicated CSAO's have the second highest turnover rate. (RC)
