Bethune Elementary School: 1986-87 School Report.

This report from the Bethune Elementary School in Atlanta (Georgia) provides information on student achievement for the 1986-87 school year. The narrative presents 27 findings concerning enrollment, attendance, reading achievement, and math achievement. Conclusions generated from these findings are the following: (1) the school was below the national norms for reading and math in both 1986 and 1987; (2) second and fourth grade students scored above the national norm for social studies and below for science; (3) although the greater portion of reading and math basal materials were completed, in only grades 2, 4, and 5 did 50 percent or more students complete the designated number of reading magazines, and no grade level met the basal expectations for math; (4) the number of kindergarten students who entered with no formal preschool experience decreased; (5) first grade scores for reading and math were well below the state average; (6) 20 percent of the third grade students needed retesting on the criterion-referenced test; and (7) there was an increase in retention for grades 1-5, and 16 percent of the kindergarten students were retained.
