Teaching French: An Introduction to Applied Linguistics.
Politzer, Robert L.
Application of linguistic principles in the teaching of French in secondary schools and colleges is the main objective of this introductory text for teachers. Part One treats basic methodological considerations, among which psychological aspects of language learning, the use of English in the classroom, types of exercises used in language drills, and visual aids are emphasized. As an introduction to applied linguistic theory, Part Two is primarily directed toward the teaching of: (1) pronunciation, (2) morphology, (3) syntactical patterns, and (4) vocabulary. A discussion of general phonetics and phonemics serves as a foundation for the material directly related to teaching techniques, while a statement on cultural and literary context serves as a conclusion. A 105-item, subject classified bibliography includes an annotated section of French textbooks. (RL)
