Consultation in Higher Education: A Handbook for Practitioners and Clients.
Pilon, Daniel H.; Bergquist, William H.
Designed for new consultants or those who will be employing them, this manual focuses on principles of consultation and the use and training of consultants in colleges and universities. The role and functions of a consultant, the consulting process (from introductory to exiting stages), and three models of consultation are presented in the first section. They reflect the consultant's point of view and specific considerations that should be in the consultant's mind throughout a consulting relationship. The second section, on using and training consultants, proposes a procedure especially helpful for first-time users of consultation. This section also: describes consultation from the client's point of view (concluding with a discussion of the techniques for evaluating consultancies and the way in which this information can be used); identifies common purposes for which clients may seek consulting help (as advocate, reactor, evaluator, etc.); outlines processes used to train consultants and clients; and offers thoughts on values and ethical considerations for consultants and clients. Evaluation forms and questionnaires are included throughout the handbook. A brief glossary, a history of the Council for the Advancement of Small Colleges' National Consulting Network, and a 38-item bibliography are appended. (PHR)
