Self-Editorializing: PESA and "Educational Philosophy and Theory", after Twenty-Five Years
Peters, Michael A.
Educational Philosophy and Theory, v41 n7 p801-803 Dec 2009
The Philosophy of Education Society of Australasia (PESA) and the field of philosophy of education seemed like a natural junction in this author's life. They provided a means by which he could begin to think about the relations between education and his own experiences as a student and teacher, and philosophy. Peters has been editor of "Educational Philosophy and Theory" for over ten years and his understanding of journal systems and the political economy of academic publishing has become a very important part of his research agenda. He thinks it is absolutely fundamental that scholars and academics become aware of the material and historical conditions of their own intellectual reproduction and development if they are to gain control over their own intellectual labour process. He argues that this is important in the age of the "knowledge economy" when the State demands ever more closely meshed performance-related outcomes in line with the mindless continuous improvement ideology and the big publishing corporations, who aiding and abetting, provide the new digital architectures and systems contributing to what Lyotard in the late 1970s so prophetically called "the logic of performativity".
