The bibliography of research on the visually handicapped covers approximately 1,300 entries published between the years 1953 and 1971, inclusive. Only those references containing reports of research on the visually handicapped in which empirical data of some kind were collected are included. Studies of single cases are included, with most studies focusing on legally blind subjects. Excluded is medical research on the eye blindness. The bibliography is meant to supplement and update Books about the Blind, published in 1953 by the American Foundation for the Blind and compiled by Helga Lende. Sources said to have been searched systematically from January 1953 through December 1971 include Psychological Abstracts, Dissertation Abstracts and Dissertation Abstracts International, Exceptional Children, New Outlook for the Blind, International Journal for the Education of the Blind, and Education of the Visually Handicapped. Entries include journal articles, bulletins, theses, books, some foreign publications, US government publications, manuals, and other publications. Generally provided in each entry are author, title, publication date, place of publication, and page numbers. (CB)
