Addressing the Spectrum of Adolescent Weight-Related Problems: Engaging Parents and Communities
Neumark-Sztainer, Dianne
Prevention Researcher, v14 n3 p11-14 Sep 2007
Weight-related problems, including eating disorders, disordered eating, and obesity, are prevalent among adolescents. School and community-based educators and health care providers have an important role to play in the prevention of weight-related problems in youth. This article includes: 1) a brief overview of weight-related problems in adolescents; 2) a rationale for simultaneously addressing a broad spectrum of weight-related problems, rather than only focusing on eating disorders or obesity prevention; 3) suggestions and program examples for working with adolescents within school and community-based settings; and 4) guidelines for helping parents raise children with healthy eating and exercise behaviors, positive body images, and healthy weights. (Contains 1 table and 3 figures.)
