Educating the Early Childhood Workforce: Trends in Higher Education
Neugebauer, Roger
Exchange: The Early Childhood Leaders' Magazine Since 1978, n172 p22-25 Nov-Dec 2006
This paper presents the country's early childhood educators' views from a survey conducted by "Exchange" regarding on trends affecting the early childhood segment of higher education. From the survey, five key trends were identified: (1) Shrinking student population--teachers are paid poorly so there is little incentive to invest resources in a college education to pursue such employment; (2) Changing student population--the student population is much more diverse in terms of ethnicity, age, language, and educational preparation; (3) Changing course content--respondents cited a need to keep pace with the changes in the field and society in the content they offer to students; (4) Increasing use of technology--higher education institutions see potential in increasing their reach through technology; and (5) the continuing challenge of articulation--institutions of higher education have difficulty talking to each other.
